Since the lunchboxes giveaway program took flight on 10 June, Wednesday, DLs' Caring Community has been monitoring the progress and response closely.
The elderly citizens and needy families responded very well to the heart-warming gesture of the DLs' Caring Community that takes care of their lunch on a daily basis since then, and have fostered closer bond with their estate neighbours because of this initiative as well.
The increase of volunteers coming forward to participate in this lunchboxes giveaway also clearly shows that people believe in this cause, hence do not mind sacrificing their time and efforts in sharing some goodness with the elderly or less fortunate.
Today marks the fifth day of the lunchboxes giveaway program at Blk 499C Tampines void deck, completed smoothly with the assistance of Desmond Lim and 10 volunteers (5 whom are new) diligently, as well as the support of Willing Hearts and SSVP Holy Trinity Conference.
Besides distributing scrumptious cooked food today, DLs' Caring Community also surprised the residents by giving out Rice Dumplings aka "Bak Chang" in light of the upcoming Duan Wu Festival (more commonly known as Rice Dumplings Day / "Zhong Zhi Jie" in Chinese). This early celebration brought both delight and joy to the residents who commented that "these dumplings are so delicious - eat in the mouth, sweet in the heart!"
On top of that, boxes of face masks have also been disseminated to protect the residents against the flu bug going around lately, as well as potential spread of MERS and SARS diseases. "Aiyo, we never thought about it! Give out rice already very good, but they also care about our overall well-being!" A cheery elderly lady remarked as she walked past with her hands laden with box of cooked food, box of mask and rice dumplings.
